The Heart

The Heart

The heart is known by most

As the four chambered muscle

Beating away inside their chest

But to me, the heart is the dull ache

Groaning inside a cage of bones

Quietly it turns and twists

As thoughts of loved ones far away

Make its cage dark and crowded

It weeps and whispers sad words

Wishing and hoping for a lighter day

The quiet thoughts and secret desires

Of the heavy heart rises from the depth

To give birth to song and poem
