Expected

Note: This was written when I reflected on what the media tells us, what our family tells us, and what we tell ourselves. It is a hard look at what I really want to do with my life and who I am doing it for. And why I am doing it.

Paint a smile
Be thin

That is what is expected

Laugh at jokes
Cry at the sad parts

That is what is expected

Be strong
Be confident

That is what is expected

But is it truly you?
Is it funny to you?
Why do you wear your mask?

Dance to the tune
Sing along now

Do what is expected

Stand up now
Now you shake hands

Do what is expected of you

But are you being you?
Is this what you want to do?
Is the mask feel heavy to you?

Do you want this to be you?

Need to have curves
Get some muscle

This is what they want of you

Get a job
Raise a family

This is what they want of you

Be successful
Be interesting

This is what they want of you

But what do you want from you?
What do you want from life?
Who are you?

Now the time is ending
This is where it counts

Was it worth it to you?
